I will be traveling across the US with my husband this coming summer. He’s a long haul truck driver and me and my son plan to join him for a few weeks every now and then. I have no clue where well end up stopping in your state so I was hoping you could all help me by telling me cool kid friendly places to see. I know there will be times where we’ll be waiting a day or so to pick up or drop off and I’d love to use that free time to explore areas. I’m the kind of person who likes to plan as much as possible. So any and all recommendations of places to stop and see would be greatly appreciated
Thanks so much for all your help
Lisa
Need HelpAlong I-70? Some of the cool things to do with your son would include the State Capital Dome Tour %26amp; the Kansas Museum of History in Topeka, the museums %26amp; monuments on Fort Riley near Junction City, the Zoo at Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure, Sternberg Museum of Natural History at Hays, and either the badlands at Castle Rock or the Chalk Pyramids.
http://www.kansastravel.org/ has details on these attractions and more.
Need HelpIf you are going to be in the Hutchinson area (25 miles NW of Wichita)...especially with a child...you must see the Cosmosphere Space Center there. Many exhibits from the race to space, Russian and American, including the %26#39;original'; (i.e. the real thing!) Apollo 13 capsul that brought back our astronauts from the ill-fated, moon mission. If you can, before visiting, watch the movie ';Apollo 13'; with Tom Hanks, to allow your child (children) to grasp it%26#39;s significance. There is also a large, hands-on area for children, and a wrap-around theater showing a variety of specialty movies, which do not necessarily relate to space, but are always ';an experience!';
If you or your son are into wierd stuff, go to The Garden of Eden in Lucus. One of my favorite little off the main road finds.
It%26#39;s about 20 minutes off 1-70 in centra/western Kansas and crazy interesting. The guy who created it and lived in the house is (as I recall) buried in a tiny pyramid tha you can look into and see the body.
The drive is actually very pretty in the summer and if you don%26#39;t have a lot of experience in small midwestern towns, Lucus is an eye opener.
Lucas is filled with similar quirky things: Grassroots Art Center, Flying Pig Gallery, Florence Dieble%26#39;s Rock Garden, the Garden of Isis, and the World%26#39;s Largest Selection of the World%26#39;s Smallest Versions of the World%26#39;s Largest Things.
All within walking distance of each other.
