Looking for Atomic Age, Classic Neon Motel/Hotels

My sweetie and I are taking a cross-country road trip next August and we%26#39;d like to stay in hotels or motels that have that real vintage vibe.

I love the Safari Inn, in Burbank California. Sweet Motel with pool and vintage neon but modern facilities.

It%26#39;s easy to find pictures on the web r in books of classic neon signs but I want to stay the night in a place that looks straight out of the 50s (or 30s, 40s, 60s) but isn%26#39;t a rundown dump.

If you have a recommendation of someplace unusual, that works too.

Thanks for any help!

Which highways are you taking through Kansas?

If I-70, for the %26#39;30s, look at the Midland Hotel in Wilson www.midland-hotel.com/ or the The Eldridge Hotel in Lawrence www.eldridgehotel.com/

For the %26#39;50s, I can think of more restaurants than motels.]

We don%26#39;t know our route yet so both suggestions are helpful. Also, all restaurant suggestions are very much appreciated.

Thanks!

We are looking for something more like this:

coasthotels.com/home/…

Al%26#39;s Chickenette in Hays, right off I-70 is a place you should try: www.kansastravel.org/alschickenette.JPG Or Jim%26#39;s Steak House in Pittsburg: www.kansastravel.org/06jimssteakhouse.JPG

For more details about both those restaurants: www.kansastravel.org/kansasrestaurants.htm

If coming thru Wichita area for eats try Town and Country a good ole mom and pop with the best Prime Rib. Go for lunch. Near Kellogg (Hwy 54)on West side of town. There is also a Brints dinner which is like one of the last metal diners around near Lincoln and Oliver.

Now if you ever go up to Ohio there is a great mom and pop hotel (we call it the Bates motel) but if is nothing if not friendly near Lake erie called the Maples Motel. It is a step back in time. Look at on the web. We took pictures last time we were there and printed thme in black and white because they just should be. Pretty sure they have a website.

Manato Springs Colorado has some great old motels where you drive into the stall next to your little cottage, and no lie our room opened w/a skeleton key. It was like a time warp. Sorry I can not remember the name of the place.

Have a blast.

Midwest, is this the site? http://www.maplesmotel.com/

Neon, and great rates, too!
