Kansas City Airport Parking

I have to fly out of KC and need to park for 10 days what is my best and cheapest option.???

Kansas City Airport Parking

Long term parking is pretty cheap at $5. You might try one of the nearby hotels for a better deal.

Travel FROM Wichita (ICT) reverse look-up

Any ideas on how to find last -minute/bargain travel options from Wichita, KS? We have some of the highest airfaires from Wichita and it would be great to find a web-site that listed deals with only a location flying FROM with the destination an unknown variable. We don%26#39;t necessarily always have a destination in mind - just looking for a quick get - out - of town bargain without having to drive to OKC or KC to fly.

Thanks!

Travelocity lets you do that exact search on the current weekend or the folloing one.

30 years ago, there was a resturant called the ';Kona Kai'; (sp?) near the plaza, KCMO.---they served great ';pressed duck.'; My wife%26#39;s favorite chinese food. ---Unfortunately, the resturant closed long ago. ---My wife and I just returned from Florida--where we happened across a resturant the served ';Mandarin pressed duck.'; It was fair; not great--- we vowed to try to find a resturant in. or within 50 miles of, Kansas City or Topeka that served it----can anyone help?---Please. ---Jim.

Have you tried Bo Lings? I don%26#39;t know if they do or not but their dim sum is good. They are in the Plaza and also Overland Park.

    Wichita Inn

If you are looking for a clean, reasonably priced motel in West Wichita you should check in to the Wichita Inn. It is strictly a motel,no pool or restaurant although there are several restaurants within walking distance. Texas Roadhouse,Ryans Steakhouse and Lees Chinese. Sheplers Western Wear is just across the street, also a Sams Club and Wal-Mart close by. There is a bar directly in back that does serve sandwiches. The rooms have a small frig and a micro wave. It is only about two years old. Rooms are approx. $50 plus tax. Nothing upscale but clean and a good value.

    Hi,

Salina Kansas has a campground called Lakeside Recreation Park, camping, lodge, swimming pond with slide 785-667-5795. Location is just south of Salina.

    For anyone coming to Wichita

Being a local here in Wichita a nice website to checkout for those coming to town is www.wichita360.com It has some pretty good information on it.

Thank you, Biotech, for posting a link to that site. I checked it out and it does indeed have lots of helpful information.

    For anyone coming to Wichita

Yes it is a good site

Your Welcome. I live here locally and use it quite a bit.

Super 8 West Wichita Airport Inn

My daughter and I stayed at this Super 8

for 4 nights. The management here is very

hospitable and the housekeeping staff did

a wonderful job. No, this is not The Plaza

or The Waldorf, but we always felt safe, clean

and comfortable. If you%26#39;re on a budget

but want to be pampered, this is the place

in Wichita. We will return to this Super 8

each time we go to Wichita.

Super 8 West Wichita Airport Inn

The inexpensive hotel that I usually visit in Wichita (Days Inn at

4875 S. Laura) is full this weekend, so I am looking for another. But much as i would like to take this recomendation, I don%26#39;t have much faith in a post by someone that just posts one time ever, to rave about one business.

Actually makes me less likely to go there.

If you are looking for a place to stay here in wichita try doing a search on

    http://www.utopia.worldventures.com

This website searches several websites at once. It makes it more convenient that going from Travelocity to Expedia, then to Orbitz, then to Hotels.com, etc...

That website will search their inventory for you.

Thanks, katjo47, but I was interested in quality not price and availablity. Travelocity does a good time of checking on price and available rooms, followed by a visit to the hotel%26#39;s website to see if a better deal is offered there.

I%26#39;ve stayed at several less expensive Wichita hotels and motels. I do not want to visit most of them a second time.

I now see that part of my original post is missing.

It began with the comment that... I find someone registering for a Travelocity account, then posting just once in a rave review of just one business, doesn%26#39;t give me confidence in the post.

This is a bit late for you looking for a hotel, but the next time that you are in town, try the Hotel Oldtown. It is located in downtown Wichita and is great. We have stayed there several times and really enjoyed it.

We%26#39;ll be driving through Wichita in late September. Is there anything nice to do there (no children with us) if we want to take a breather from traveling? What will the weather likely be?

    Wichita

If you love history, we have a wonderful World History museum in Old Town. There are also some fun shops in Old Town. There is a great art museum and botanical garden (not sure how much to see in Sept).

Also in Old Town is a fun melodrama/dinner place.

If you enjoy zoos, the Sedgwick County Zoo is one of the best around.

The weather should be mild in the 70%26#39;s or so, possibly a little windy.

    Wichita

    Hello.

I have family in Wichita and I can tell you that the weather is usually quite nice in September.

There are a lot of things to do in Wichita. I would stick to the east side of twon where there are many restaurants and shopping areas to choose from. I travel to Wichita ocassionally and it seems to have grown considerably in the last few years.

The west side has ';grown up'; considerably in the past two years. The main shopping districts are on North Rock Road (21st and higher) and North Maize Road (again 21st and higher). There is also some great shopping in Old Town downtown.

In Sept the new Gander Mountain store will be open downtown right on the river. It%26#39;s next to the boathouse and the new Water Walk development on the Arkansas River.

I forgot to post the first time about Old Cowtown. If you like old west history, this is great place. It has original buildings from Wichita%26#39;s history. It%26#39;s in the ';Museums on the River'; district, which includes Botanica, The Art Museum, Exploration Place (science center), The Indian Center, and the Boat House....all along/near the rivers.

The Old Town area is highly over-rated. The East and West sides of town offer a better variety of activities as well as shopping.

    ';The Old Town area is highly over-rated. The East and West sides of town offer a better variety of activities as well as shopping.';

Seems unlikely that you are still around here after almost a year, but I wonder how long it has been since you have been to the Old Town area? I visited it a couple of months ago and was very impressed with what has happened there over the last few years.

    PS for others. ';Old Town'; is not the same thing as ';Old Cow Town.';

Old town is definately for the 20-30 somethings.

There are night clubs, restaurants, sports bars, movie theatre all right there. If your looking for a nice quiet time you might look elsewhere, but if you are wanting to be seen Old Town is the place.

During the day, Old Town is not targeted towards the under 40%26#39;s crowd (I don%26#39;t necessarily think it is during the p.m. either). There are great shops and restaurants to check out. During the weekend, they have a Farm %26amp; Art Market. It has really grown and gotten much more sophisticated in the last year or so.

At age 52, I don%26#39;t feel out of place at all.

  • Cross Country driving (California to Kansas)

I need some advice about the roads (stops, things to see, places

to stay) for my son and husband who plan to drive from Davis CA to Lawrence KS. Anyone from Kansas has any experience doing this stretch? Any comments, suggestions and help would be much appreciated.

Cross Country driving (California to Kansas)

The area near I-70 crossing Kansas has a lot of interesting spots, but most people never get off the Interstate and see them.

In the western part of the state there are two fascinating chalk formations: Castle Rock and the Chalk Pyramids. Both are on range land and undeveloped. I%26#39;ve never seen anyone else at them, it is almost feels you discovered them. http://www.kansastravel.org/chalkkansas.html

Hays has the Sternberg Museum of Natural History at Fort Hays State University. Fossils and life sized recreations of dinosaurs %26amp; other creatures that used to roam western Kansas.

Lucas is a Mecca for lovers of Grassroots art. It has the Garden of Eden, Grassroots Arts Center and other wonderful odd art. http://www.kansastravel.org/lucaskansas.htm

Abilene has the Eisenhower home, museum, presidential Library %26amp; museum. Across the street is the Greyhound Hall of Fame. All but the museum are free.

Fort Riley has United States Cavalry Museum, Custer House, Regimental Museum, First Territorial Capitol of Kansas and more. All free! http://www.kansastravel.org/fortriley.htm

There are other places but that will give them a start.

Neat places to eat include the Brookville Hotel or Kirby House in Abilene, Pusan Restaurant in Junction City, Cozy Inn in Salina, and Bunker Hill Cafe in Bunker Hill. All are 5 miles or less from I-70.

The 83 year old Cozy Inn sells hamburgers by the sack. The tiny burgers are prepared on the original grill that is only used to cook these burgers. The Bunker Hill Cafe serves tremendous steaks (get Elk if they have it) in a 1917 limestone building that is only open 4 evening a week.

Cross Country driving (California to Kansas)

Thank you so much Lighthouselovertoo for your reply.

Well its both, i.e. the need to transfer furntirue etc. and to use this opportunity and see some sights as this might be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

I think they might drive 5 days or so and I saw its about 1750 miles.

So they will try and see what they can and still try and be in Lawrence in time for the family to settle in.

NBG.---There is a rather impressive church in Victoria, It is just off I-70 between Hays and Russell Ks. It was built from locally quarried limestone. This also ';Wild Bill Hickok'; and General Custer territory.

Does the University of Kansas enter into your plans? In my humble opinion Lawrence is the best place to live in Kansas.

    Pat

    Hi Pat,

Yes, I hope you are right, my son just got a job at the U of Kansas in Lawrence and we are all very excited about it.

On their way from California to Lawrence they wanted to do some quick sightseeing as it seems a once in a lifetime chance.

    Nora.

Nora, Trust me, I am right.

If you are a basketball fan this is a great place to be. Rock Chalk Jayhawk.

    Pat

IIRC, Wakeeney (KS) is about half way between Denver and Kansas City, and might be a good stopping place. Goodland, Kansas, is also on the way from Denver and has decent food and places to stay. Someone mentioned the church near Victoria; it%26#39;s known as the Cathedral of the Plains due to the architecture, and it%26#39;s pretty awesome, knowing the story of how it was built. There%26#39;s also Dodge City and Hays/Ft. Hays. Interesting history, museums, and the like.

I too like Cozys as well as the Brookville Hotel (best fried chicken dinners ever, hands down!) which used to be in Brookville but is now in Abilene. Also the Eisenhower museum/boyhood home/final resting place in Abilene is a very interesting place to visit.

Lawrence is quite beautiful and has good shopping downtown as well as in the outlying areas.

OK, I%26#39;m getting all nostalgic now! I grew up in Kansas and still love the state.

If your son is in Kansas for some time, he%26#39;ll have a chance to visit many interesting and historic places. The State Museum in Topeka always has good exhibits. I highly recommend subscribing to Kansas! Magazine, as it has articles about the many things to do and see in Kansas.

    Zoey1996,

The Capital Building now offers free tours of the dome, all the way to the top. Lots of interesting graffiti up there.

Thanks again all of you who replied to my query.

It seems that they will have one big problem and its crossing the Sierras and its the elevation.

The problem is the u-haul on one side and

the high elevation as a health issue on the other side. So I guess

we shall need to re-consider all possibilities how to cross safely

from California to Kansas. I have noted all your suggestions and thank you for it.

The Kansas Guidebook for Explorers by Marci Penner would be a great gift for someone new to Kansas or anyone traveling across Kansas.

    http://kansasguidebook.com/

The author traveled all over the state to the very smallest of towns, to find things of interest. She reviewed restaurants and stayed in various lodgings, particularly bed and breakfasts. She writes about 500 small towns, listing sights to see and things to do. Many are intriguing, such as the quirky Garden of Eden at Lucas, some listings are the home-grown shops that dot the landscape, and some tell where to find yummy home-baked pies or other made-from-scratch goodies. Something for everyone and every interest!

Thanks Kathy, I think I will buy it.

    Horse back riding in KS

My sons, 7 and 9, will be traveling from St Louis to Denver and want to stop somewhere about half way to stay the night. They would like to horseback ride wherever we stop. Any tips? Cities? If not horseback, then something boys would enjoy in the middle of KS?

    Horse back riding in KS

http://www.goverlandstagestop.com/ probably is closest to what you asked for.

Enjoyable things for the boys near I-70 in the middle of Kansas:

Fort Riley: Right off I-70, the home of the Big Red One has a lot of free attractions. Museums, historic buildings, historical markers, statues and monuments.

Salina: Zoo at Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure is a great middle sized zoo. West of Salina and off I-70 about 3 miles.

Hays: The Sternberg Museum of Natural History displays dinosaur and fish fossils from the area and has animated life size recreations that the kids will love. Visible from I-70

Further west there are some great chalk formations on undeveloped range land that would excite them. But they are 15-20 miles off the freeway. Or the boys might like riding a miniature train at the Ellis Railroad Museum.

  • Hotel near Cessna Stadium

Can anyone suggest a clean and reasonable hotel/motel with easy access to Cessna Stadium? Within walking distance would be great, or somplace with transportation service. Thanks.

    Hotel near Cessna Stadium

Hawk,----There is nothing within walking distance. There are some reasonably priced motels on East Kellogg(Wichita Inn, Super 8) these are about 5 miles away but I doubt if they have transportation available. The other choices would be Holiday Inn and a Marriott. There is plenty of parking if you are there when WSU classes are not in session. Driving would be no problem as the traffic here is not congested except as rush hour..

    Hotel near Cessna Stadium

As mentioned above, there are no hotels within walking distance, but Cessna stadium is on the Wichita State campus so there will plenty of parking for the Rolling Stones concert on October 2nd.

The closest [4 miles east / 1mile north of the sadium], nicest hotels would be these Marriott properties:

Courtyard Wichita East @ 2975 North Webb Road

TownePlace Suites Wichita East @ 9444 East 29th Street North

These hotels are across from each other at 29th St. and Webb Road. Highway K-96 crosses above this intersection. From KC it would be a 4-lane highway all the way on I-35 to Turnpike exit K-96 and 6 miles to the northwest on K-96 to these hotels.

There are also several nice hotels in the area of Webb Road and US 54/400 that are probably 5 or 6 miles from the stadium. There is a Marriott, a Fairfiled Inn, and a couple other hotels there also. I suspect the Rolling Stones will be staying in this Marriott of the Hyatt Regency in downtown Wichita when they are here if they stay in town. It shouldn%26#39;t be to bad a drive to these hotels once you get a way from the stadium.

    Cheers!

    Advice on where to stay

Traveling to Kansas City end of September with friends for the 49er/Chiefs game. Any thoughts on where to stay, what to do? Looking for area near nightlife and dining.

    Advice on where to stay

To be near the nightlife, you will probably want to stay in Kansas City, Missouri. The greatest concentration of nightlife is from the Country Club Plaza area north toward the Missouri River.

The good dining is more scattered. What types of food are you looking for?

    Advice on where to stay

I second staying on the Plaza- you%26#39;ll have nightlife, shops, and many restraunts to chose from.

I like the price since I%26#39;m on a budget, but I was wondering if anyone knew if it had a reputation for being clean and nice. Thanks :)

Budget Host Villa Inn and Suites

I%26#39;m not sure what the Budget Host is like but the Super 8 is a decent, reasonably priced hotel that is worth checking out. The Best Western Vagabond would also be a good choice. Hope this helps.

Budget Host Villa Inn and Suites

I was unhappy with the Best Western in Hays.

I booked a room there a few months ago because they advertised free high speed internet. But when I got there, I learned that internet was not available in the rooms.

They offer one DSL line. At the end of the hot noisy space where they have their ice and vending machines. It was unpleasant and I had to wait my turn to hook the their line to my computer.

Thanks for the input. I guess the Best Western can be scratched off of the list, but I would still suggest the Super 8.

Well, it is the old thing about what you want. If someone didn%26#39;t want internet, it wouldn%26#39;t matter.

On the other hand, I don%26#39;t eat breakfast, so a motel that many folks would downgrade for a poor breakfast, would still be fine with me.

By coincidence, I will be at the Hay%26#39;s Super 8 tonight, and at the Super 8 in WaKeeney tomorrow night.

I owe you an apology. It was the Days Inn, not the Best Western, where I had my bad experience.

That%26#39;s okay. Please write back about your experience with the Super 8 in Hays.

    New In Town

My husband and I are moving to Overland Park for his job next month. We will only be there a few months, but I will not be working and would like to find activities where I can meet people as well.

    New In Town

It might help if you mentioned what type of activities you like to do.

Also, I find the people in this area pretty friendly. I do a lot of things by myself, but end up spending time and having conversations with strangers at the events.

I would like to take enrichment classes- possibly language classes, scrapbooking classes, cooking classes, ballroom dance possibly. I would like to meet people my age-mid 20s-30s that are married...we don%26#39;t have children, so we don%26#39;t have that outlet to making friends.

    Several suggestions -

    1. Get into activities - I run and am part of a runner%26#39;s group that meet each Saturday mornining. There are groups and organized leagues for just about any sport at any of the local health clubs/gyms. Also, Blue Valley Rec or Leawood Rec have sports activities for adults.

    2. Alumni Events - For myself, I am a jayhawk and of course, KC has a very active alumni association. However, KC prolly has a alumni assoc. for just about any school you went to. I do find that these assoc. are usually ';recent-grads'; type social clubs but you will meet new people.

    3. Religious Facility - Whatever religion/denomination you are, your local church, temple, mosque, etc prolly has some type of social network/club to get members to know each other. I know mine does.

    4. Volunteer - I used to volunteer with handsonkc.org back when it was kccares. Great way to meet new people and give back a little.

    5. Neighbors - if you know of other couples in your neighborhood invite them over for a cook-out, couples night out, etc.

Nevermind. I was looking for Manhattan, as in, New York.

    Cessna Stadium Parking

Thanks everyone for your previous help in finding a room. Now I just have to get to the concert. On the Ticketmaster site it says ';Parking on and around campus will be limited so ticket holders are encouraged to utilize our shuttle service.'; On the map it looks like it will be harder for me to get to the shuttle than to get to the stadium. However, I don%26#39;t want to have to walk too far (I%26#39;m an old guy). For those of you in the know, will parking really be as limited as they seem to want us to think? I think I recall a previous post that indicates that stadium parking should be plentiful. Any thoughts?

    Cessna Stadium Parking

Hawk, Where is it you catch the shuttle? Parking at Wichita State is usually difficult when classes are in session. We go to the basketball games and have to walk about 10 minutes and that is when there are only 10,000 people at the game. There are supposed to be 40,000 for the Stones. My advice would be to take the shuttle . Getting in may not be too much of a problem but getting out could be hell.

    Cessna Stadium Parking

Parking will be a nightmare unless you get there really early and if you do get close in parking it will probably take forever to get away. I would utilize the shuttle if at all possible.

Here is the link to the shuttle map:

    webs.wichita.edu/gs/graphics/shuttlemap.pdf

    Cheers!

    Bill

Thanks for the advice. And, as best I can tell, there are no hotels within walking distance to the shuttle pick-up points. I guess I%26#39;ll just have to wait and do the best I can at the time. I do appreciate the ';inside'; info.

If it was me, I would try to get a hotel room on the east side of Wichita such as the Hilton Garden Inn or one of the hotels on east 29th street or north Webb Road. If you do end up utilizing the shuttles it would (should) be an easy drive from the parking areas, to the above hotels.

    Cheers!

    billnict

Joining the conversation a bit late, but wanted to also recommend using the shuttle. The area around WSU%26#39;s campus isn%26#39;t the best. Odds are you%26#39;ll have to park a ways away from the stadium %26amp; I wouldn%26#39;t want to walk back to my parked car after the concert late at night. Assuming you made it back to your vehicle without incident, you not find it in as good a shape as you left it, if you know what I%26#39;m saying. The shuttle is definitely your best option.

Not too late until after I leave for Wichita. LOL I think I%26#39;m pretty well convinced to use the shuttle. I%26#39;ve been reading in some chat rooms that they may cancel the concert due to lackluster ticket sales. Say it ain%26#39;t so!

how about a tailgate party/....will we be cooking steaks in a parking lot by the stadium?....what time does the parking lot open?...thanks

Which city is more fun? My friend and I are planning a visit and love crazy bars. We%26#39;re both in our mid to late 20%26#39;s...

I%26#39;m also wondering what the nicest restaurant and/or hotel is. The creme de la creme, so to speak.

Any other advice or suggestions for us (we%26#39;re traveling from San Francisco and New York City, respectively) would be appreciated!!

    Witchita vs. Topeka

Of the two, I would suggest Wichita. But I think you would have much more fun in Lawrence, abuout 30 miles east of Topeka.

    Stones Concert Directions

I wil be traveling to Wichita from Tulsa for the concert. I will be coming in on 35 North. Where exactly is Cessna Stadium located and what exit do I need to take? I appreciate the help.

    Stones Concert Directions

Go to mapquest.com and put in your address in the ';from'; and put in cessna staduim, wichita, ks in the ';to'; and it will give you exact directions. I%26#39;m coming down south on I35 from KC. See you there!

    Stones Concert Directions

    For directions, go to http://www.ticketmaster.com/venue/49360

You should take advantage of the free shuttle - several streets will be blocked and on campus parking is limited to 5,000 spaces. A map is at webs.wichita.edu/gs/graphics/shuttlemap.pdf

After you pay the Turnpike toll at the south Wichita exit, take I-135 north to exit 10 = east K-96. Then use the map referenced about to go to Woodlawn exit and south [right] to 29th street north. The school is on the SW corner of 29th and Woodlawn.

    Rolling Stones Concert

I%26#39;m still a little concerned about them canceling. We%26#39;re 5 days away and they still haven%26#39;t announced an opening act. Can any of you Wichita residents tell me if they%26#39;ve started building the stage as yet. I%26#39;ve read that construction was suppossed to start today. If I know that they have started it would make me feel better.

The band also will open for the Stones in Missoula, Mont., on Oct. 4.

    In keeping with the Stones early promise that the support acts on the encore leg of their ';A Bigger Bang'; tour would be ';young, contemporary acts,'; BRMC (as their fans call them), have just a few albums to their credit. But they earned critical acclaim for their most-recent effort, 2005%26#39;s ';Howl,'; which Entertainment Weekly described as ';deeply hypnotic narco-blues that conjure both The Band%26#39;s epic pastorals... and Nick Cave%26#39;s Southern Goth.';

    Rolling Stones Concert

It was just announced on the 10 o%26#39;clock news that the first of the 70 semi loads of equipment have just arrived at Cessna Stadium to begin setting up for Sunday.

Thanks to you both for the info. Four days and counting. Kinda silly for someone pushing 60, huh?

Hawk,---It would be a lot sillier to sit at home on your butt and say,';I%26#39;m too old to go';. If you get the chance to do something that interests you .go for it.

    Pat

Age is only a number! Enjoy the concert!

So do we get a trip report?

Don%26#39;t really have much of a trip report. We decided not to spend the night and just drive back after the concert. We got there in time for a Nu-Way before the concert. We were walking around the stadium to go to an entrance on the north side when Mick arrived, so he waved to us. The concert was fantastic, see this site: http://iorr.org/tour05/wichita.htm for a set list, some pictures, and reviews. I35 north had a LOT of concert traffic on it heading back to KC after. It was a great event, thanks everyone for all the help.

    Looking for sights along I-70

Hi, I am helping a friend move from California to Maryland and will be driving a 26ft truck with a car hauler. But, I was wanting to know if anyone knew of any good places along I-70 to stop for some outdoor activity or historic places. Since I am in a big truck, there arent many places I can go but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. Thanks.

    Looking for sights along I-70

    Hi, a couple of ideas:

    1. Eisenhower Museum in Abilene, Kansas. Good on WWII history. There are some other touristy-things in Abilene -- Old Abilene town, the Eisenhower library, etc.

    2. Kansas State Historical museum...it%26#39;s right on the edge of I70 on the west side of Topeka. Nice, small museum...very good place to take a break on your way through.

    3. You could also take a bit of a bypass and drive through Ft. Riley, near Junction City. There are a few modest historical sites along the way.

    4. Also, a new dinosaur museum (lots of fossils) near Hays, Kansas.

As for outdoor activities -- there are numerous reservoirs spread across Kansas, none too far off I70. Wilson, Milford, Tuttle Creek, Clinton...all would offer walking, fishing, mountain bike riding.

    Looking for sights along I-70

We live in KC and just spent a weekend %26#39;exploring%26#39; Kansas. The Rolling Hills Zoo just west of Salina is an excellent zoo, small but very high quality, if you are into zoos. They also have a museum of stuffed animals that is the largest I have seen anywhere, they said the collection was bought from an individual in CA. The other poster mentioned it, but the Sternberg museum in Hays was also impressive. It has fossils, but also a large collection of memorabilia from the %26#39;wild west%26#39; days of KS, and a collection of art prints focused on moths. Both had large parking lots that would accomodate a big truck.

I just noticed you were talking about all of 1-70 not just Kansas. Just so you can plan, ,Western KS and Eastern Colorado have very little, in terms of amenities, sights or even gas stations. We drive from KC to Colorado to ski every year and we usually just drive straight through the night. But if you are hungry, or want a break, Hays is the last major stop until Denver. There are several scenic points you can stop off in the Rocky mountains. Golden has a very nice railroad museum and you can take free tours of the Coors plant in Golden as well. There is not much on the scenic or historic side from KC to St Loius, but there are a lot of exits, restaurants, towns, along the way. In KC there is a visitor information center right off of 70 at the stadium drive exit, right in front of Arrowhead and Royals stadiums. They would have suggestions. There is lots to see and do in KC, but not right off the highway, more driving around is involved.

There are a couple of drive by photo ops in the Western part of the State. Van Gogh Sunflower Easel project on Business Loop Goodland, Exit 17. Buffalo Bill Statue off I-70 at US 83 in Oakley. If you were in car, I%26#39;d recommend Castle Rock, a Natural Landmark (Inland Ice Age Ocean Rock formation - Kansas Badlands) south of Quinter, Exit 107). Eat Buffalo steaks and fresh pies and bread at the Q-Inn at the Exit. Pete Felten%26#39;s stone sculpture studio is another site in Hays, off Downtown. A soujourn to Lucas, north of Wilson Exit features the Garden of Eden and Grassroots Art Center offers Kansas culture at some of its weirdest. Old Czeck town of Wilson has restored limestone hotel, opera house, etc. which were featured in Paper Moon (Tatum O%26#39;Neil%26#39;s childhood AA movie). Wilson Lake is the area. You also play with Greyhounds at their Dog Hall of Hame in Abilene and play with the Atomic Cannon overlooking Fort Riley, Exit 300. There is also a Grandma Hoerners apple sauce plant off I-70, near Alma. A new Wizard of Oz Museum is located off I-70 in Wamego. Council Grove, again off I-70 makes for a nice soujourn (historic hotel, riverwalk, restaurant in business since 1857, Indian Mission, town and federal lake, etc).

stay away from sternberg it hasn%26#39;t had a decent display since the dinosaur sue was here. the rolling hills zoo is great near salina and it has plenty of room for your truck.

Ellsworth, Kansas, an old cowtown is only about seven miles south of I-70 and has lots of Old West history.

A fun stop is Drovers Mercantile in Ellsworth. Talk with Cowboy, Jim Gray or his sidekick Kassie, about the frontier history of the area and the historic cattle drives. The store has lots of real cowboy stuff. Ellsworth%26#39;s downtown also has other interesting stores for antiques, home decor, cowboy hats, and there%26#39;s a B%26amp;B in a Victorian mansion, the Ira E. Lloyd House.

Not far from Ellsworth is the Mushroom Rocks (state park) where you can see a dramatic geologic phenomenon made of sandstone.

The area of Kansas calls itself Post Rock Country, for all the stone fence posts (made of quarried limestone) that can be seen outlining the pastures.

The lasr.net website has a lot of recreation and outdoor information. The Kansas section of I-70 has quite a few interesting sites of historic and natural interest.

There are quite a few places off of I-70 where you can still see the wagon wheel ruts of the Sante Fe and Oregon trails. I believe Council Grove is one of the best places (near Manhattan, KS, in the mid-part of the state.) Let me know if you want more info and I can track something down for you. If so, please email me directlyat jarush@fdic.gov

Don%26#39;t miss the Midland Hotel in Wilson, just off I-70 between Russell and Salina. 105 years old, renovated, and outstanding. Also very clean and moderate pricing, and lots of parking for that that truck!

Stucky, interesting because I%26#39;ve heard others mention this hotel... can you comment on the food - menu and quality? Rumor had it that they there was an outstanding pastry chef there at one time. The rooms are supposed to be top-shelf as well. Good suggestion.

Not too far off I-70 is the Garden of Eden in Lucas.. There are some interesting rock formations that can be found near and north of Salina called Mushroom Rock State Park and Rock City in Minneapolis. More information can be found at http://kansas.adastra23.com

  • what is the best restaurant for a great steak??

Would like to get a really good steak while in Witchita?? Any suggestions???

what is the best restaurant for a great steak??

terrasole,--- My first choice would be Scotch%26amp;Sirloin on East Kellogg Street. Other good ones are Chesters Chop House,Cibolas,Red Rock Canyon Grill. These are more upscale than your chain restaurants. I believe all but Cibolas have a web site that you can do a search for complete menus. One that is a Wichita institution in Doc%26#39;s Steak House on N.Broadway but I have not been there in quite sometime.

These are all locally owned restaurants and not chain clones.

I have to agree. I love Chester%26#39;s Chophouse. Red Rock Canyon and the Scotch also have great steaks. Yia Yia%26#39;s in another suggestion.

I have a close friend that works at the chop house. Its fairly expensive but a good steak.

Red Canyon grill is also a nice place. It is on Rock road

I forgot to mention that Chester%26#39;d Chophouse is on Webb Rd.

Is Red Rock not a chain? We have one here in OKC.

I ate at Doc%26#39;s Steakhouse in August.

The decor and food was a bit like stepping back into the 70s. It wasn%26#39;t terrible, but I wouldn%26#39;t go there again.

Redrock is a chain, headquartered in OKC. I would recommend Timberline, at Rock Road and 21st Street in addition to Chester%26#39;s %26amp; Cibola. YiaYia%26#39;s has the best beef tenderloin I%26#39;ve ever had - also at 21st %26amp; Rock Rd. Enjoy!

My sweetie and I are taking a cross-country road trip next August and we%26#39;d like to stay in hotels or motels that have that real vintage vibe.

It%26#39;s easy to find pictures on the web r in books of classic neon signs but I want to stay the night in a place that looks straight out of the 50s (or 30s, 40s, 60s) but isn%26#39;t a rundown dump.

Al%26#39;s Chickenette in Hays, right off I-70 is a place you should try: www.kansastravel.org/alschickenette.JPG Or Jim%26#39;s Steak House in Pittsburg: www.kansastravel.org/06jimssteakhouse.JPG

For more details about both those restaurants: www.kansastravel.org/kansasrestaurants.htm

If coming thru Wichita area for eats try Town and Country a good ole mom and pop with the best Prime Rib. Go for lunch. Near Kellogg (Hwy 54)on West side of town. There is also a Brints dinner which is like one of the last metal diners around near Lincoln and Oliver.

Now if you ever go up to Ohio there is a great mom and pop hotel (we call it the Bates motel) but if is nothing if not friendly near Lake erie called the Maples Motel. It is a step back in time. Look at on the web. We took pictures last time we were there and printed thme in black and white because they just should be. Pretty sure they have a website.

Manato Springs Colorado has some great old motels where you drive into the stall next to your little cottage, and no lie our room opened w/a skeleton key. It was like a time warp. Sorry I can not remember the name of the place.

    Have a blast.

Has anyone stayed here , eaten in the hotel dining room or tried their beer? I have to be in Chanute and it sounds like an interesting place for a small town.

    Pat

    Tioga Suites Hotel=Chanute

I would highly recommend this hotel and restaurant (Safari Grill) for a nice getaway. The food is tasty and plentiful, with much more variety than expected for a small town. Their on-site brewery turns out a wide range of beer. You should be able to find something that appeals to you. There is a formal dining room, but we sat in a different area that was more like a sports bar. It was fun but a little too dark for us to see the food and each other. We asked for a candle, but they said they didn%26#39;t have any. The service was fine otherwise, though.

The decor of the hotel and restaurant is very retro and adds to the fun. You can see photos of the suites on their website. It is very nice for the price. We had a separate sitting room, three closets, a small bathroom, microwave, refrigerator, and a very comfortable bed. It was a little too warm in the bedroom on a very hot day. There was a window air conditioner in the sitting room that didn%26#39;t quite make the bedroom cool enough for us. It wasn%26#39;t too bad, though.

Personally, I don%26#39;t mind putting up with a few glitches to enjoy the small town, going-back-in-time ambience you can find in Kansas. The nearby Safari Museum is not very big, but still interesting and unusual. Everyone we met was friendly, and we went back home feeling relaxed and happy.

KSsunshine-----Thanks for the reply. This is what I was hoping to hear and looking forward to staying there.

They were sited on Saturday evening, 11/4 for selling liquor to minors. I found the food to be greasy at times as I travel thru the area 2x a week. The service can be good at times and very bad at other times. The casual side of dining can be rather noisy when they all come in to drink and is too dark for me. I have never stayed overnight in the hotel but rumors have it that many things go on in the overnight hours.

    My Dear Uncle Fred Swenson

I just received word that my Uncle Fred has passed away at the amazing age of 102 and 1/2. Uncle Fred lived his life in and around Cottonwood Falls. His influence brought me and my husband to be, to Cottonwood Falls April 1, 2004, not only to celebrate Fred%26#39;s 100th birthday but to also marry my sweetheart in the old court house in Cottonwood Falls. My husband and I returned to Cottonwood Falls April 1, %26#39;05, and April 1, of this year, again to celebrate the life of Fred Swenson and to celebrate our wedding anniversary.

What a wonderful, smart, funny guy my Uncle Fred was. I%26#39;m so grateful that I had all these years to visit with him. Our visits met so much to Uncle Fred as well. This year on his 102, my husband and I, my brother and his kids traveled from Seal Beach and Lake Arrowhead CA to surprise him at his birthday party. Being the dear tender hearted man that he is, Uncle Fred first told us he was wondering if we would be there, then shed a few tears. His California family shed a few tears as well.

I%26#39;d like to thank all the kind folks in Cottonwood Falls that we have had the pleasure to meet. What a wonderful community of fine people.

My husband and I will again be visiting Cottonwood Falls on April 1, %26#39;07. Fred has gone on to his final reward but our memories pull us back to your town.

    With love in my heart,

    Annelle Aviani-Baum

What a nice remembrance of your uncle! I have come to appreciate more and more over the years the presence in my life growing up of my uncles and aunts and great-uncles and great-aunts.

    Topeka and Tornados

Could someone tell me if Topeka has a lot of tornados that plow through there. Also, if there are things to do in Topeka without having to drive to Kansas City. Also how is the cost of living? Thanks to anyone with info.

    Topeka and Tornados

Contrary to what Hollywood would have you believe, Kansas doesn%26#39;t fight tornados day in and day out. :)

I lived in Topeka about 15 years ago and still have friends there. However, they tell me it has changed a lot since I lived there. Much more crime. As far as cost of living, it is probably about average for larger cities in Kansas -- not too high or too low in other words.

Entertainment wise, I never really stayed in Topeka for fun. We always came to Kansas City or Lawrence.

    Topeka and Tornados

Peak time for tornados is in the Spring when (in a very basic, simplistic explanation) cool dry air and hot, moist air collide. Kansas is only a very small piece of ';tornado alley.'; Infact, several years back I read a book about tornados and up to that time, that book stated that actually Iowa had more tornados that Kansas! (I don%26#39;t believe that to necessarily to be true now, but I do hope it does illustrate a point.) (The Wizard of Oz has really made Kansas notorious!)

I was an official storm spotter when I lived around Wichita (we have sinced moved to north central Kansas) during that entire time I saw several wall clouds (storm cells that could likely produce tornados or funnels) but very few tornados. Infact, I actually have seen cold air funnels more than tornados.

I would say that by living in Louisianna, you have more of a likelyhood of experiencing a tornado spawned from a hurricane than experiencing one while visiting Topeka--even during tornado season.

Topeka has some VERY interesting and informative sites and attractions, but would not necessarily be considered a place for nightlife as many would think it. I would visit Lawrence or KC for those. Wichita is a very artsy town, believe it or not and I would put it%26#39;s symphony up against KC%26#39;s any day!! BUT Topeka makes a great place to visit as it has some great museums, Swope park is fun and interesting, but zoo is expensive for what you get (Wichita zoo is much better and is part of a ';family'; of zoos where you can buy a season pass and get into other ';sister'; zoos on that pass--one such sister zoo is the Tulsa, OK zoo which is a real delight.) I have visited many state capital buildings and our capital building is actually architeturally one of the best and has a very interesting history, although a few years ago, the tour guides just weren%26#39;t as interesting as some that we have experienced elsewhere--may have been the individual guide, though.

Topeka is a great place to ';springboard'; into the very BEAUTIFUL flint hills. The small towns between Topeka and Junction City are real gems in themselves and should not be missed. A drive into the flint hills is a must if you visit Kansas. You can stop in Alva and purchase a very nice assortment of some very tasty and hearty country cheeses from their cheese factory as well as visit the antique stores down town. You will find that Kansas is really an antique mecca in that inexpensive antique stores can be found in just about every rural town in the state. All along I-70 there are signs of local winerys with one at Paxico and Salina%26#39;s award winning Smoky Hill Winery as well as small local winery%26#39;s in the flint hills. The flint hills has some very nice bed and breakfasts as well. So...it depends on what you are looking for as far as entertainment--open up your eyes to all the small town benefits that are around Topeka!!

Cost of living is very reasonable if we are comparing it to the rest of the nation. Kansas typically ranks fairly high in property taxing, but quality of living is usually considered very high. Kansas has always ranked very high in health care and education. (Infact, according to Dr. Sweet, leading athority on HIV/AIDS, Kansas%26#39; high AIDS numbers are due to the fact that people come back to Kansas for the end stages of their disease.)

    As far as for living in Kansas...Topeka would not be my choice. It has become notorious for it%26#39;s gangs and isn%26#39;t known for having the best schools in the state. Cost for value, though, Topeka is still ';a good buy.';

Kansas and Topeka both have ALOT to offer--be creative (you can do just about anything in Kansas that you can do elsewhere such as ice climbing on silos) and adventurous (lots of places to sky dive and hang glide) or just relax and enjoy the subtle beauty that abounds!

I%26#39;ve lived about 60 miles from Topeka for 21 years. Haven%26#39;t seen a tornado yet, though I have seen large hail.

Although only an hour from KC, Topeka mostly has its own events and there are people there that haven%26#39;t been to KC in years.

The cost of living in this part of the country is much lower than the coasts.

Although there are some interesting things in Topeka and I occasionally spend the day there, it has never appealed as much to me, as other communities in the region. If I was to take a job there, I would consider moving to Lawrence and commuting.

To the best of my knowledge Topeka has only had one really bad tornado and that was 40 years ago. Housing in this part of the country is very cheap compared to other parts of the U.S. You can buy a nice 3- 4 bedroom house with established trees ,lawn etc. for $125,000. These are homes built in the 1960%26#39;s %26amp; 70%26#39;s. Not this plywood and plastic crap being built now.

The climate is not too bad except for July%26amp;August which is usually hot and humid. With a few exceptions winter has been a non- factor for the last 10 years. Last January our temp. averaged over 50 degrees.

Lawrence, which is 25 miles from Topeka ,is a great town. The University of Kansas is there which makes for many things to see and do.

As for taxes we rank 25th overall in total tax liability.

The Facts on Kansas’ Tax Climate

Here are some basic facts on Kansas’s tax system and how it compares to other states:

Tax Freedom Day Arrived on April 22nd in Kansas

Tax Freedom Day is the day when Americans finally have earned enough money to pay off their total tax bill for the year. In 2006, Kansas taxpayers had to work until April 22nd (ranked 26th nationally) to pay their total tax bill, four days before National Tax Freedom Day (April 26th). The Tax Freedom Days of neighboring states were: Nebraska, April 23rd (22nd); Missouri, April 18th (35th); Oklahoma, April 14th (47th); and Colorado, April 22nd (23rd).

Kansas’ State/Local Tax Burden Above Average

Estimated at 10.7% of income, Kansas’s state/local tax burden percentage ranks 18th highest nationally, and above the national average of 10.6%. Kansas taxpayers pay $3,885 per-capita in state and local taxes.

Kansas’ 2006 Business Tax Climate Ranks 34th

Kansas ranks 34th in the Tax Foundation%26#39;s State Business Tax Climate Index. The Index compares the states in five areas of taxation that impact business: corporate taxes; individual income taxes; sales and gross receipts taxes; unemployment insurance taxes; and taxes on wealth, including residential and commercial property. The ranks of neighboring states were as follows: Nebraska (43rd), Missouri (20th), Oklahoma (17th), and Colorado (12th).

Kansas’s corporate tax structure consists of two brackets with a top rate of 7.35%, kicking in at an income level of $50,000. Among states levying corporate income taxes, Kansas’ rate ranks 23rd highest nationally. In 2004, corporate tax collections reached $61 per capita, ranking the state 36th highest among states that tax corporate income.

Kansas Levies Sales Tax above National Median; Gasoline Tax among Nation%26#39;s Highest

Kansas levies a 5.3% general sales or use tax on consumers, which is just above the national median of 5%. State and local governments combined collect approximately $908 per capita in general sales taxes, ranking 15th nationally. Kansas’s gasoline tax stands at 25 cents per gallon, which ranks 10th highest nationally. Kansas%26#39; cigarette tax stands at 79 cents per pack of twenty and ranks 25th nationally. The sales tax was adopted in 1937, the gasoline tax in 1925 and the cigarette tax in 1927.

    Kansas Property Taxes: Above Average

Kansas is one of the 37 states that collect property taxes at both the state and local levels. As in most states, local governments collect far more. Kansas%26#39; localities collected $3,189,062,000 in property taxes in fiscal year 2004, the latest year for which the Census Bureau has published state-by-state data. At the state level, Kansas collected $57,554,000 in property taxes during FY 2004, making its combined state/local property taxes $3,246,616,000. That brings its per capita collection to $1,187, ranking 14th highest nationally. In FY 2002, Kansas was ranked 24th.

Federal Tax Burdens and Expenditures: Kansas is a Beneficiary State

Kansas taxpayers receive more federal funding per dollar of federal taxes paid compared to the average state. Per dollar of Federal tax collected in 2004, Kansas citizens received approximately $1.12 in the way of federal spending. This ranks the state 23rd nationally and represents a rise from 1992 when Kansas received $1.05 per dollar of taxes in federal spending (ranking 27th nationally). Neighboring states and the amount of federal spending they received per dollar of federal taxes paid were: Nebraska ($1.07), Missouri ($1.29), Oklahoma ($1.48), and Colorado ($0.79).

Good posts ya%26#39;ll! Thanx for all the info! :-)

Topeka has had only one notable tornado -- June 8th, 1966. At the time it was the worst tornado in terms of $$ (not lives) to hit the U.S., so there are lots of places you can read about it. See, for example, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topeka_Tornado_of_1966

I remember being in elementary school in Topeka around 1986 or 1987 and being forced to sit in the hallway with hands over head for two hours because of a very slow-moving tornado in town that wasn%26#39;t even coming in our direction. It turns out it was an F1 or F0, weak tornado, that tore the roofs off a few houses and did nothing else. It didn%26#39;t even stay on the ground, but jumped up and back down and up.

If you%26#39;re concerned about tornadoes, just be sure to stay in a place with a basement. The tornado sirens will go off, and you can go into the basement, and there you%26#39;ll be very safe, if maybe uncomfortable.

Tornadoes are most common in central Oklahoma. South-Central Kansas gets a fair amount of tornadoes too. But Topeka is further north, and they do happen, but not as much.

In the last couple years, because of global warming or at least due to warming over the pacific, the upper level wind patterns have been different, and as a result, tornados are not forming over Kansas and Oklahoma as much as they used to, and are forming in areas which don%26#39;t normally get tornadoes. It%26#39;ll probably take a few more years to figure out what is going on, though.

Topeka isn%26#39;t very expensive. As for things to do in town, the western part of town has been expanding in the last 20 years, and most of the shops and restaurants are on Wanamaker between about 29th and I-70. Most stuff there seems to close around 9 or 10pm, though.

Lawrence, KS is about 20 miles east, and there%26#39;s plenty to do there; it%26#39;s a nice college town.

Well, the last tornado of any significance to hit Topeka occurred on June 8, 1966 and there was no recorded tornado of any size before that, dating back to its founding in 1854, so my guess is that you%26#39;re probably pretty safe. You%26#39;ll get maybe 1-2 warnings a year, but unlike a hurricane, a tornado is more finicky and is as likely as not to duck back up into the clouds. I know, I grew up there. Depending on how you%26#39;re getting there, you have lots of options other than Kansas City, and I do recommend that you avoid it: ';Kanasas City is currently closed for construction, please select another destination for your travel convenience';. Try I-335 off of I-35 if you%26#39;re coming from the south, Hwy. 75 from the north, II-70 from the west, or use some good 2 lanes to swing wide of ';Traffic Barrier City';. If you%26#39;re into history, there%26#39;s good frontier history in Toepka and Lawrence. Lawrence is also a nice town to visit and the home of the Univ. of Kansas, 20 miles east. There%26#39;s also the Flint Hills. Some of our friends have said that it%26#39;s beauty only a Kansan can love, but I recommend you take a look. If you%26#39;re looking for arts and entertainment, you probably need to brave the construction and go to KC. Hope that Helps.

I have lived in Topeka 60 + years and went through the tornado in 66 (blew my home apart) and then a few years later there was a smaller one. Could have been even 10 years later. We just don%26#39;t have the extreme weather we use to have a long time ago. Not as cold in the winter and not as hot in the summer.

I don%26#39;t know where the previous post came from about gangs in Topeka but it really is not a problem. Like kids everywhere their are small ';gangs'; but not the gangs you see in larger communties like LA. Have I ever seen any gangs in Topeka, NO. Have I ever been in fear to drive late at night, NO. HAs anyone ever destroyed any of my property in the last 60 years, NO.

It depends on what you want for entertainment. Entertainment is here depending on what you like. Theater, is here and in Lawrence. Road shows are here weekly from Broadway to Pops. We have sports here, lots of golf courses and a tennis club. A new sports complex for school kids and events are brought in there. Lots of movie theaters, restaurants galore. You can do just about everything here you can do any place else.

The houses here compared to California are cheap but I would said they are average compared to most of the US. Our property taxes are high. You can get a very average house for $125,000. The nicer houses are $300,000 and up, in good locations. Our sales tax is 7.45%.

Topeka is a good place to raise your kids. I would say the average salary is less then in most cities of the same size. We have two large hospitals and other smaller facilities.

If someone bought me a $2,000,000 house in Kansas City, I wouldn%26#39;t move. The traffic is terrible and for some crazy reason it is ALWAYS under construction. Just like in Dallas, people live in the suburbs and usually don%26#39;t cross the county lines. It is just like a bunch of small towns. If I wanted to go to KC its just an hour%26#39;s drive and like the people that live there, I usually stay on the south side, shop, eat and come back home.

Topeka and the surrounding communities are around 200,000 people and that%26#39;s big enough for me and small enough for me, as a matter of fact, it%26#39;s just right.

Back to the tornados, we don%26#39;t even go downstairs when the sirens blow. The community is very saftey oriented and after you have lived here and gone through a tornado or two, you know when to take cover and when you can watch. Radio and TV stations give you advanced warnings way before they even think about blowing the sirens. I would say your chances of riding out a tornato in Topeka are just about the same as anywhere else in the south or midwest or maybe even less of a chance.

Obviously we love our community and could move anywhere we wanted to, any time we wanted but we are where we want to be.

  • Don't Stay Here!!!

My family and I went to a reunion in Dodge this August and prior to our early flight home we stayed one night at the Four Points Sheraton to be near the airport. The choice of this hotel was a big mistake. Upon arrival my family was almost run over by unruly, drunken teenagers(or slightly older) in baseball uniforms who were running through the hallway. The yelling and laughing was so loud that once in our room we had to turn up the television to drown out the disturbance. My husband went down to the lobby to use the internet to check on our flight information but was unable to due to another group of kids monopolizing the entire computer room. When returning to our room he witnessed a situation in which another group of males crashed a wedding reception that was taking place in the hotel and were insulting wedding guests. The management at the hotel seemed very intimidated by these malesand did nothing to curtail their repulsive behavior. My husband was so disqusted by this point that he wanted to leave. We only had a few hours there due to the early flight so we opted to stay. The condition of the room was very poor due to a disgusting smell coming from the air-conditioner and not-so clean bathroom. The room was extremely narrow and the two double beds just about took up the entire room. Fortunately for us we were so tired from our three hour ride from Dodge City that we were willing to deal with the smell my husband described as a ';dead body';. There are other hotels near the airport, please don%26#39;t stay here!

    Don't Stay Here!!!

It appears as though you had the misfortune to be there at the same time as some of the baseball teams. The National Baseball Congress has a tournament in Wichita every year in August. Most of the players are of college age and seem to act accordingly. There are several hundred who descend on Wichita yearly.

At least the train that used to run behind the motel is gone. That used to blast you out of bed at rather inopportune times. Sorry for your bad experience.

    Don't Stay Here!!!

I stayed at the same hotel on a quieter night in October and enjoyed the experience. I booked via priceline for $35 a night, which I thought was a bargain for the overall quality of the hotel....This is certainly not a five star establishment, but the bed was clean and didn%26#39;t squeek much...the free coffee in the lobby was hot.....and their were no baseball teams monopolizing the computers!

    Sorry for your bad experience.

I stay at this hotel a lot due to being a Starwood Guest member and the stays count towards my membership. I%26#39;ve stayed many many times over the past few years....ever since it became a Four Points.

I am sorry for your unpleasant experience during your stay. I must add, that I have never encountered the type of problems there that you mentioned. I am sure that this was just an isolated occurance.

Overall, this is a pretty nice place to stay. The beds are very comfortable and if you happen to get one of their suites, the rooms are very roomy.

This isn%26#39;t to say that I have never experienced any problems at this hotel, but that can happen anywhere. They have lovely grounds during the summer. It is nice to sit around the pool or outside your room if it has access.

If I want to treat the Grandkids to a pool during the winter I will stay where there is an inside pool...otherwise, this is my place.

Give them another chance and I%26#39;m sure you will be happy with it.

Traveling to Wichita - Pool for kids?

We are meeting friends in Wichita and was wondering what hotel had the best pool for the kids?

Traveling to Wichita - Pool for kids?

don%26#39;t know if you%26#39;ve already gone or not....but I%26#39;ve stayed at a few places where I take my Granddaughter for the pool.

The Marriott has a very nice pool.....

Comfort Inn East has a decent pool

Best Western Airport has a pool, and game room activities to enjoy

I%26#39;ve not been at the Airport Inn for a year or so....it used to be a Holiday Inn and they have a nice sized pool and more roomy than some of the others....

    Nice, reasonable hotel in Olathe

Hoping someone can help me find a hotel for friends going to a conference in Olathe Feb.7-10, wanting VERY reasonable hotel with Queen beds(2) and possibly breakfast. It%26#39;s hard to know which hotels are ok. have seen some bad reviews for some of the lower priced hotels on tripadvisor. Any help would be appreciated.

    Linda in Iowa

    Nice, reasonable hotel in Olathe

With the exception of the Days Inn and Holiday Inn, all of the chain motels in Olathe are modern and only a few years old.

The Holiday Inn is the only one I have stayed in. It is dated, but I wouldn%26#39;t avoid it if the price was right. The restaurant isn%26#39;t that good, but there are many nearby restaurants, and it is the only hotel in Olathe with its own restaurant.

    Keith

    Nice, reasonable hotel in Olathe

    Keith,

Thanks for the quick reply. Most hotels are a little higher than what we want to pay. I may try priceline, but I think the only one that comes up is the Holiday Inn and they were hoping for something with breakfast. Thanks again.

Cost of living in Manhattan, Kansas?

Hi, I will have to move to Manhattan (Kansas) from EU and spend over there one to three years, so I am searching for info about cost of living (food, energy, IT, water prices, etc.) per person in Manhattan, Kansas. I am also looking for appartment/condominium in Manhattan not so far from Campus. DO You know the best web sites where I can find such information. THanks in advanced from Belgium.

Cost of living in Manhattan, Kansas?

Will you be studying or working at the university, K-State? Their offices can be helpful.

Another place to look is at e-podunk. www.epodunk.com/cgi-bin/genInfo.php鈥?/a> Lots of general information and links on the site. Podunk is slang usually referring to a small town.

    Best of luck to you!

Cost of living in Manhattan, Kansas?

Thanks a lot Zoey1996 for a web site. It is great !

    kukulore, I can%26#39;t be of any help with anything specific about costs but I know after living in Belgium the cost of anything in Manhattan will seem very small. Manhattan is called ';The Little Apple'; as opposed to Manhattan in New York City which is ';The Big Apple.';

Gasoline for your car is about .40-.45 Euros a litre.

    Hi,

Welcome to Manhattan, KS - yes we do call it the ';Little Apple'; but I%26#39;m not sure how cheap it is to live here. This is a small town with K-State students and military families from nearby Ft. Riley battling it out for housing. But then I have no idea what housing costs in Belgium, so you will have to judge for yourself.

    Good info websites -

    local newspaper www.themercury.com

    K-State newspaper www.kstatecollegian.com

Chamber of Commerce www.manhattan.org (lots of info about Manhattan %26amp; contact names, etc.)

Prices as of Feb. 6, 2007

    Gallon of gasoline $2.16

    Gallon of milk $3.15

    Dozen eggs $1.67

I can鈥檛 give you the cost of housing because, to be honest, the quality of apartments varies tremendously. A factor you will want to consider when looking for a place to live is some areas are very student oriented 鈥?meaning lots of loud parties all night every weekend.

Lastly, many people who move here from large metropolitan areas are very surprised to find we have NO public transportation, no bus system, and no railway station. We do have a small regional airport. A car is pretty much a necessity.

    Need Help

I will be traveling across the US with my husband this coming summer. He’s a long haul truck driver and me and my son plan to join him for a few weeks every now and then. I have no clue where well end up stopping in your state so I was hoping you could all help me by telling me cool kid friendly places to see. I know there will be times where we’ll be waiting a day or so to pick up or drop off and I’d love to use that free time to explore areas. I’m the kind of person who likes to plan as much as possible. So any and all recommendations of places to stop and see would be greatly appreciated

Thanks so much for all your help

Along I-70? Some of the cool things to do with your son would include the State Capital Dome Tour %26amp; the Kansas Museum of History in Topeka, the museums %26amp; monuments on Fort Riley near Junction City, the Zoo at Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure, Sternberg Museum of Natural History at Hays, and either the badlands at Castle Rock or the Chalk Pyramids.

http://www.kansastravel.org/ has details on these attractions and more.

    Need Help

    If you are going to be in the Hutchinson area (25 miles NW of Wichita)...especially with a child...you must see the Cosmosphere Space Center there. Many exhibits from the race to space, Russian and American, including the %26#39;original'; (i.e. the real thing!) Apollo 13 capsul that brought back our astronauts from the ill-fated, moon mission. If you can, before visiting, watch the movie ';Apollo 13'; with Tom Hanks, to allow your child (children) to grasp it%26#39;s significance. There is also a large, hands-on area for children, and a wrap-around theater showing a variety of specialty movies, which do not necessarily relate to space, but are always ';an experience!';

If you or your son are into wierd stuff, go to The Garden of Eden in Lucus. One of my favorite little off the main road finds.

It%26#39;s about 20 minutes off 1-70 in centra/western Kansas and crazy interesting. The guy who created it and lived in the house is (as I recall) buried in a tiny pyramid tha you can look into and see the body.

The drive is actually very pretty in the summer and if you don%26#39;t have a lot of experience in small midwestern towns, Lucus is an eye opener.

Lucas is filled with similar quirky things: Grassroots Art Center, Flying Pig Gallery, Florence Dieble%26#39;s Rock Garden, the Garden of Isis, and the World%26#39;s Largest Selection of the World%26#39;s Smallest Versions of the World%26#39;s Largest Things.

All within walking distance of each other.

  • Must do/sees??

We%26#39;re in Wichita for a baptism and have 2 days to sightsee. (May)

    any attractions that are outstanding?

    Must do/sees??

The Sedgwick County Zoo is one of the finest zoos in the country.

Old Town is a nice entertainment district that also houses the Wichita - Sedgwick County Historical Museum, Great Plains Transportation Museum, Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and the Coleman outlet %26amp; tiny free museum. I think the most interesting attraction in Old Town is the Museum of World Treasures. The others depend on your interests.

There is another set of attractions along the Arkansas River. My picks are the Wichita Art Museum and Botanica as the most interesting among those.

    Must do/sees??

thanks -- we%26#39;ll look into the historical museums.

Depending on the weather, you might check out Botanica, the Wichita Gardens. http://www.botanica.org

I%26#39;m not sure which 2 days you will be in Wichita, but the

annual RIVER FESTIVAL is in May. It%26#39;s a popular event to attend.

You can buy a button for $5 %26amp; attend most things free.

Or if you don%26#39;t like that sort of thing, you now know to avoid

    downtown during the festival. :)

The favorite event is always the fireworks over the river on the last night.

We always take our out of town guest to the Hutchinson

Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center. Yes, I know it%26#39;s

not technically in Wichita, but it is 45 minutes NW of Wichita.

    Have Fun! :)

If you are also looking for restaurants that are unique to the region, let me suggest two:

The Nu-Way Cafe, 1416 W Douglas Avenue, is the flagship of a small chain of restaurants serving crumbly, loose meat sandwiches - much like Maid-Rite. This was the very first Nu-Way and it opened in 1930.

In additoin to the sandwiches, they have great French fries and onion rings. The root beer is made daily and it is even better.

Stroud%26#39;s Restaurant is in a 1930s barn. They and the formerly connected Stroud%26#39;s in Kansas City are famous for their family style fried chicken dinners. Get the pork shops if you don%26#39;t care for chicken.

thanks for the Riverfest info. Looks like we are there for part of it. Info on their website says May 11-19.

That sounds interesting and unique to the city. may not have all that much time given the family events.

Not sure where your coming from, (hawaii?) but I wouldn%26#39;t worry so much about what to see or do unless you want to get away from the family.

Cause there%26#39;s not a lot to do. The zoo and art museum are ok, I suppose. RiverFest is probably your best bet to kill a couple of hours.

If your a baseball fan, the Wranglers or WSU games can be a fun time.

    ';Not sure where your coming from, (hawaii?) but I wouldn%26#39;t worry so much about what to see or do unless you want to get away from the family.';

I%26#39;m not sure i dare comment! But you read my mind.

Yeah, half the party is coming from San Diego so the zoo is out. I%26#39;ve seen enough gardens to last me a lifetime all over Europe and NA but museum re the cowboy era would be novel. The river area also sounds different. Any big local fair has something to see and do. Just want to get a better feel for that part of the country. Closest I%26#39;ve ever lived is St. Louis.

  • Topeka to Denver

My family and I are driving from Nashville, TN to Boulder, CO and are trying to plan our route. From what I can tell I will need to stay somewhere between Topeka and Denver - any suggestions? Because it%26#39;s such a long trip I%26#39;d like to break it up by staying in some neat spots. My mother grew up in KS but I%26#39;ve never been, so know virtually nothing about it. If anyone can share some feedback about what lies withing that stretch of road that might be nice, I%26#39;d appreciate it. Thanks so much,

    Topeka to Denver

Wakeeney, Kansas, is about halfway between Denver and Kansas City. Hays is close by. Not sure what you mean by ';neat'; but Hays has a university, museum, etc. I%26#39;m assuming you%26#39;re staying on I-70 for the trip. Other highways are options but take longer than the interstate.

    Topeka to Denver

There are quite a few interesting spots along that stretch, if you get just a few miles off I-70. East to west:

The State Capital Dome Tour %26amp; the Kansas Museum of History in Topeka

The museums %26amp; monuments on Fort Riley near Junction City

The Zoo at Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure just west of Salina

Sternberg Museum of Natural History at Hays

The badlands at Castle Rock or the Chalk Pyramids.

One of the coolest places is Lucas, http://www.kansastravel.org/lucaskansas.htm a tiny community with a bunch of quirky attractions within walking distance of each other.

Restaurants of note along this route include:

Pusan Restaurant %26amp; Korean Dinner in Junction City

Brookville Hotel Restaurant (family style fried chicken) in Abilene

Bunker Hill Cafe (steaks) in Bunker Hill

www.kansastravel.org/kansasrestaurants.htm has pictures and brief reviews of all of those.

Give us more of an idea of what kind of attraction or activity interests you, so we can narrow things down.

Topeka is a clean and inexpensive place to stop. Depends on how close you want to stay to the highway. Wanamaker Rd has a lot of chain resturants for dinner (Olive Garden, Chili%26#39;s, a ton of steakhouses!) Downtown Topeka does not have an active night life! There may be a resturant or two, but you may end up eating in your hotel. If you stay downtown and want an adventure, there are some yummy Mexican resturants in the Hispanic East Topeka area. Get some recommendations from locals before you go though, to keep you in a safe area.

    Dancing in Topeka?

I%26#39;ll be in Topeka for 4 weeks on an externship, and have nights and weekends available. I LOVE to dance (swing, country swing, salsa, ballroom, club...) and was wondering what%26#39;s available in Topeka.

    Dancing in Topeka?

Try Electric Cowboy in South Topeka. Also, Jul%26#39;s has bands on weekends.

Hotel recommendation around Salina thats pet friendly

Hi, were driving out to Denver via I-70 and Salina looks like a good place to stop for the night based on miles travelled in a day. Can anyone recommend a decent hotel where we can bring in 2 small pets in for the night? We don%26#39;t care about pools or cable tv or internet, just clean and comfortable beds, pet friendly, and something to eat in the morning. Actually it doesn%26#39;t have to be in Salina, perhaps 1 town east or west.

The Holiday Inn Express just off I-70 allows pets. I also searched in Expedia and found 8 other motels that allow pets. If you get it narrowed down to two or three, check the reviews here to help make your choice.

Does anyone know of a place in the greater Kansas City area ,or any where else in the general area, that plays traditional Irish music? Thanks.

I don%26#39;t know about any place in KC but in Topeka there is a great bar O%26#39;Dooley%26#39;s that has Irish music on Friday and Saturday nights. It%26#39;s a blast!
