Burlingame History

Please visit the Schyler Museum. It holds lots of interesting artifacts %26amp; historic items of Burlingames past. Burlingame was started as a mining town. Of course it is known as the crossing of both Santa Fe Trail %26amp; Santa Fe Railroad. ';Burlingame, where rail crosses trail.';

The streets of Burlingame are unique in that they are made of brick %26amp; we park in the middle and on either side. This was for the wagons of long ago.

There are many abandoned coal mines in the area. A country drive will take you past many old school/churches, outlines of the Fort, wagon trails and many find old arrowheads.

The restaurant in Burlingame, besides being one of the best around, has many pictures of history and some of the old coal miners equipment.

Burlingame History

Yes the Museum is a nice place to visit. Many interesting things. The wide main street of Burlingame has been maimed in that it has many yellow lines and no one knows where to park anymore. The grocery store closed, the liquor store closed, the auto. center is moving, the flower shop shut down, the newspaper will probably be moving if not already, and there is nothing AT ALL for young people to do in Burlingame! Uhh, that leaves a hardware store, a library and a convenience store. WOW!!!!

  • Mid Aerica Air Museum

I want information about the Mid America Air Museum. Thanks

    Mid Aerica Air Museum

Hey I just got your message. MAAM is well worth seeing. They have over 102 airplanes and getting more all the time. They just got a Beach Starship and are reassembling it as I am typing this message. There are so many planes in the museum I call my favorite, but I would have to say the Iron Butterfly C45, F14, T38, F4u Corsair, F86,TBM, Twin Navion, Bobcat, S2B Sub Tracker, Bronco and Tiny the smallest by plane got to be a start.

The museum has a new director that came from the Linburg museum and is doing wonderful things for the museum. I live close by and get to take in all the activities. Which by the way, They have had more activities in the last 3 months then they have in 4 years.

Come see, maybe I will be available to take you for a tour.

    Lyddon Aero Service

I have flown into Liberal, Garden City, and Dodge City with my 172 Cessna. Lyddon Aero Service was the best FBO with the best and friendly service of the three Cities.

There is also a connecting flight several times a day with United%26#39;s 1900 twins that is not mentioned in the air service section of this site.

Lyddon%26#39;s offer a charter service that beats any around- hands down. They are ready to fly when you are. I did use their charter service. They did what they were asked to do, no fooling around and no surprises. I would use them again, with pleasure.

    Lyddon Aero Service

Okay I was wrong. They do mention connecting flights to Liberal in the Flights to Liberal section.

    Indoor Water Parks

Does anybody know anything about an indoor water park/hotel in the Kansas City area?

    Indoor Water Parks

It%26#39;s called the Great Wolf Lodge [GWL]. From the outside it looks like a huge log cabin. Water park is indoors. You must be a guest at the hotel to use the water park.

GWL is very easy to get to. It%26#39;s at I-435 %26amp; I-70, in Kansas City, Kansas [from Neb. take I-29 to I-435 South and avoid downtown traffic].

GWL is in the Village West Shopping Center. Village West is home of the Kansas Speeday [NASCAR %26amp; Indy Cars], Cabela%26#39;s, Nebraska Furniture Mart, T-Bones minor league baseball, and about a dozen resturants [in all price ranges].

GWL is about 20 minutes West of downtown Kansas City.

I have never stated their, but am told the weekend packages are very afforable!

    Have fun.

    Indoor Water Parks

The earlier post is right, it%26#39;s easy to get to.

We live in the area, so my daughter has been to several b-day sleepovers there ( the new exotic party I guess). I have been in to see the rooms. For a family with younger kids it is perfect-- queen bed for parents and a %26#39;bunk%26#39; area off of the main room with bunk beds and kid%26#39;s tv. The hotel has a P. Hut express so you can get personal pan pizzas or larger anytime, plus more food now that it%26#39;s been open longer. Several restaurants in the area if you want to go out for fresh air.

If the waterpark is busy at all, it%26#39;s very noisy-- high pitch sqwueels of little kids, but the set-up is very nice.

    Good winter getaway.

to go or not to go?

Hi, I am planning a mid summer trip and was wondering if Kansas would be right for us?

    How is the city?

    What to do?

    Hows the shopping?

    Safe to stay?

Any inofrmaiton would be a great help,. thanks

to go or not to go?

    Holly,

I would advise, that you actually visit Kansas City, Mo if you have a choice. I live in Kansas right across the stateline and we are really more of a suburb of KC than we are a town in Kansas. As far as Kansas itself, well, there is Lawrence where the States unniversity sits and its a pretty little town that actually has hills! ( something you wont see much of in Kansas!)

But if you want to go to KC, MO, there is a great deal more to see.

First of all, stay in the Plaza area. Great shopping and tons of it, along with wonderful restaurants and all within walking distance. The Plaza itself is a shopping district built back in the forties, designed to look like Madrid, its sister city and the city of KC carries the title of having the most fountains outside of Rome! Many of them are found in the Plaza area. There is a ';river'; that runs along side the south end and its pretty to look at but there are no real activities that include it. ITs a very pretty setting if a bit upscale for any practical shopping. Lots of outside eating too for people watching.

KC also has a professional baseball team, a nice water park and Amusement park called Worlds of Fun. Just North of the Plaza is another outdoor area called Wesport that is a bit more funky than the Plaza but even more fun at night.

Kanas City is famous for its BBQ and Jazz and both can be found within walking distance or at the very most, a short cab drive away.

And if you love art, we have one of the most beautiful buildings in the Nelson Art Gallery with several other galleries near by. Just walking around the exterior of Nelson and visiting the outdoor sculpture garden is a treat.

KC is a pretty town, especially along the wide avenues of Wardparkway and the Plaza but it can be hot and humid mid summer. So be forwarned.

    Hope this helps.

to go or not to go?

    PS

I forgot to mention that if you are into gambling, KC has four casinos North of the areas I mentioned and in Kansas, about 45 minutes west of the Plaza, is Nascar Racing in a brand new complex. Neither is my cup of tea but I know they are both popular activities around the area.

As far as safety, the Plaza is well lit and very safe, as is Wesport, even at night, as long as you dont stray outside of the busy areas there. Im not sure I would say the same about Downtown. However, we have a very inactive downtown at night, for the most part, so other than a restaurant or Crown Center ( an inclosed shopping area ), there isnt a lot to do there after hours.

The area around the NASCAR track is a rapidly developing area. There is a great hotel, especially if you have kids, called the Great Wolf Lodge, with an indoor/outdoor water park. There is a Cabela%26#39;s (every kind of outdoor gear with really neat displays) right behind the hotel. At this point, most of the development there is restaurants, but it would be a great base for your day trips (amusement park, shopping, casinos, etc.) and then you could come back and have dinner just a few minutes from your hotel.

There is also a track about 5 minutes from the NASCAR track area, the Woodlands, that has live dog and horse racing. You can sit outdoors or inside with air conditioning and a TV monitor on your table and bet on the races. They have cheap drinks/hot dogs/nachos on Friday nights. There is also a full menu restaurant with full view of the track, but to be honest, you%26#39;d probably be just as well off with hot dogs and nachos and save your money for your bets!

Have a great trip, wherever you go!

I forgot to mention the T-Bones, our minor league baseball team. Again, it%26#39;s less than five minutes from the Great Wolf Lodge, or any hotel in that area. Lots of fun sideline activities all through the games, and the prices are VERY reasonable. Also, if you don%26#39;t have kids there is a new hotel called Chateau Avalon. All the rooms have different exotic themes. They don%26#39;t have any food service, but you%26#39;re so close to barbecue, steakhouses, Irish Pub %26amp; Restaurant, Cheeseburger in Paradise, etc. that it%26#39;s not a problem. If you don%26#39;t stay there, you can still take a tour of the rooms. They have a website, I believe it%26#39;s just ChateauAvalon. More new places are completed each month, so there may be even more depending on when you visit.

Has anyone been to Brownville, Nebraska?

Hello! Brownville is right on the border of Kansas. What is the town like? How safe? How is the B%26amp;B? Thanks!

Has anyone been to Brownville, Nebraska?

I just came back from a large outdoor market that is held twice a year...kid you not...dogs, cats, and children on four wheelers and lawnmowers drive up and down main street.

Small town Mayberry from the 1950s.

Best place to eat is Wheelers at Auburn, Neb. 10 miles east.

    Anything do around Labor Day?

We are meeting some friends who are coming in from Nebraska and we are coming in from La. Is there anything going on around that time? Thanks.

    Anything do around Labor Day?

My family has always attending the Hoisington Labor Day Parade. It has been going for over 100 years now I think and there are many things to do on Hoisington%26#39;s Main Street after the parade such as a carnival, craft fair, car show and misc. booths. Hoisington can be found off of the Russell I-70 exit by turning South on 281. The highway curves back to the East, the South and then curves East going into Hoisington.

Topeka, Kansas (or Kansas in general)

I am looking to plan a trip to Kansas in Sept, Oct, or Nov, for 4 or 5 days. Which is the best month and what can I do or see that would be fun. I will be traveling with a lady friend (middle aged---oh that sounds bad---but facts are facts).

    Doug

Topeka, Kansas (or Kansas in general)

I lived in Johnson County Kansas for 16 years - absolutely beautiful! It borders the state line to Missouri, so you are very near Kansas City, MO. The Country Club Plaza there is always worth seeing, especially the lighting ceremony on Thanksgiving Day night. For the rural areas, beautiful prairie land, but not much to do or see. October and November are usually beautiful, if you can catch the fall foliage. This may not be much help as I have basically directed you to Kansas City on the Missouri side. I don%26#39;t know much about Wichita or Topeka, but Lawrence Kansas is pretty and the University is there, again that puts you in the near vicinity of KC,MO, where there is a lot to do. Union Station is there also with great dining and ';Science City';. Have fun and keep an open mind! Most of Kansas is pretty quiet! Even in Topeka you are close enough to the State Line to see a great area of the country! BR

Topeka, Kansas (or Kansas in general)

Hi! Don%26#39;t forget to visit The Kansas Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, Kansas.

It%26#39;s a Smithsonian connected space / air museum

    with an IMAX theatre.

Hutchinson is about 45 minutes NW of Wichita.

If you are interested in NASA or space or anything like

that at all, this is a MUST SEE!

Wichita has tons of things to do and places to visit also.

If you want the western theme, visit COWTOWN.

It has self-tour indoor buildings on weekdays and guided outdoor activites on the weekends.

It does close sometime in October.

Also, Old Town (near downtown) has tons of shopping and movie theatre and restaurants.

The Sedgwick County Zoo is a world class zoo and located in Wichita.

Wichita has the largest population in Kansas--almost 500,000 in the area.

Botanica is a beautiful garden area.....may not be at it%26#39;s best in late fall though.

Kansas City is 3-4 hours drive time from Wichita.

Kansas City KS %26amp; MO combination is a major midwestern city with a very large population. KC has the most stuff to do because it%26#39;s a very large city. Visit The Cheesecake Factory on the Plaza for dinner %26amp; of course, Cheesecake!

For Wichita weather info, visit www.weather.com

Look for the annual rainfall, etc.....information about

Wichita.......you can see a great time to travel based on

    statistical averages, etc...

Good Luck %26amp; have a nice trip!

Counts what you like.....and the lady friend. The is the Hutchinson trip and the many events and things to do in KC. In addition, one could visit the mushroom rocks, rock city, the Flint Hills, Coronodo%26#39;s Peak. All of these places could be found in the KS pages of Tourism. Have Fun Whatever You Do. Take Care!

I%26#39;d recommend coming in early October for cooler weather and some fall color. If you plan to stay near one of the university towns such as Lawrence (University of Kansas) or Manhattan (Kansas State University), you%26#39;ll want to check for home football games, as the towns and hotels/motels can get pretty busy. Not such a worry for Topeka (Washburn University) or Wichita (Wichita State); and Kansas City is big enough, finding a room is generally not a problem.

Things to do or see: the Renaissance Festival in Kansas City (weekends Sept. 2 through Oct. 6, including Labor Day (Sept. 5) and Columbus Day (Oct. 3), www.kcrenfest.com is usually a good time. Kansas State Historical Society Museum in Topeka has some interesting exhibits. The Eisenhower museum in Abilene Kansas honors the president of the US (1953-1961) and preserves his boyhood home. An additional attraction in Abilene is the Brookville Hotel. The original was in Brookville, Kansas, but it moved to Abilene a few years ago. It is not a hotel, but a restaurant that serves the most fantastic fried chicken dinner ever!

In Kansas City, shopping on the Plaza, touring Hallmark cards, and visiting the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art are all activities I enjoy there.

Wichita has Old Cowtown and good zoo.

There are so many things to do and see all over Kansas. Don%26#39;t overlook the small towns. Paxico (near Topeka) has some good antique shops, and many smaller communities have their own charm and attractions.

Rosemary - I%26#39;ve stayed at the Comfort Inn there which is close to I-70 and next to KFC. It was a few years back but it was a nice clean comfortable place. You can check their website for rates...good luck or do a search on travelocity or this site as well.

    off the road Hays motel

P.S. You might try Priceline as well...check out biddingfortravel.com for assistance with Priceline bids.

We%26#39;ve stayed in Hays a number of times when driving through Kansas to Denver. There are several motels right off the interstate to the south. The one we stay in, I believe, is right behind an Applebee%26#39;s that, as I recall, will deliver to the motel. I don%26#39;t know what the prices are this year but I%26#39;ll post again when I remember the name and you can check the website.

Yes, Comfort Inn there is nice, and there is also a Fairfield Inn. The Super 8 is okay, too, if you want budget lodging.

If you%26#39;re staying there on a Fri or Sat make sure to have reservations, as the high school and college football games make the hotels fill up (we learned that the hard way).

    Sunday Nights in Wichita, KS

Is there anything open late/early on Sunday night or early Monday morning??

    I%26#39;m talking between 12 and 3:00 P.M.

    What%26#39;s there to do??

    ANYTHING would be helpful.

    Sunday Nights in Wichita, KS

Do you mean between 12 a.m. and 3 a.m.? If so, there is not much going on. Most bars that are open on Sunday will have %26#39;last call%26#39; about 1:30, with everything closing at 2 a.m. There%26#39;s always the 24 hour restaurants like Village Inn and Denny%26#39;s. Other than that, I can%26#39;t think of anything that is open that late.

    Sunday Nights in Wichita, KS

Wichita has had the nickname ';Doo Dah'; for many years, at least for the 40 years that I have lived here. I am afraid that there is nothing at all to do but sleep during that time of night. The bars and restaurants close early on Sundays. My recommendation would be to stay in and watch a movie.

    One Day in Kansas City

Me and a friend are from the UK on a road trip and we have one day to spend in Kansas City. As our time is limited we are looking for a way to spend the day which doesn%26#39;t cost a huge amount of money.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

    One Day in Kansas City

The Plaza area on the Missouri side is a lot of fun to walk around. You can window shop. There are also quite a few of the fancier places to eat, but also a Starbucks and two Lattelands. If you%26#39;re a music fan the Jazz Museum is fun, also on the Missouri side. If you%26#39;re into sporting a new Cabela%26#39;s has opened in Wyandotte County. Another fun museum is the Arabia Steamboat Museum. Have a good trip!

    One Day in Kansas City

You might also enjoy a visit to the Nelson Atkins Art Museum. The Steamboat Arabia is really cool...good suggestion.

Crown Center / Country CLub Plaza

Worlds of Fun would be nice. Its north of the river in Kansas City ,Mo.

The girls would sure enjoy it.

Crown Center / Country CLub Plaza

I%26#39;d recommend going to Science City at Union Station http://www.sciencecity.com/

or walking around the shops %26amp; restaurants of the Country Club Plaza http://www.countryclubplaza.com/

If you have some time, having dessert at the Melting Pot can be a lot of fun. It is on the Plaza, but you do need to make reservations as it is rather difficult to get into, but they are a chain and have a website where you can view a menu, get hours and a phone number if you are interested.

Crown Center itself has great shopping and often has special exibits geared to interactive play for kids. And its free! The Worlds of Fun trip is a great idea for kids but takes all day as would Oceans of Fun, the attached water theme park.

To be brutally honest, I wouldnt bother with Science City, we found it geared to the smallest of kids, meaning no older than 5 or 6 would stay entertained in my opinion.

Shopping is even more fun south of you in Wesport and the Plaza is a treat for any age.

We lived in KC for 6 years and my kids LOVED going to the Plaza late afternoon/ early evening and riding in the horse drawn carriage. One year I let my daughter (age 6 at the time) wear her halloween costume, which was Cinderella, and it was a thrill to ride thru the Plaza and have everyone waving to her. Kalidescope (sp?) is owned by Hallmark and has tons of papers, cards, etc. for the kids to make their own cards and crafts.

If your girls are into history at all, the Steamboat Arabia Museum at the KC River market is fascinating

I agree with some of the other posters on activities at Crown Center and Hallmark (right across the street). Hallmark offers tours and also has a number of kids activities (Kaleidoscope, etc.)

You might enjoy a trip to the Kansas City Zoo http://www.kansascityzoo.org/ and the IMAX theater http://www.kansascityzoo.org/Imax.

There is also a Great Wolf Lodge on the Kansas side of the city near the Kansas Speedway NASCAR track. It includes a large indoor water park http://kc.greatwolflodge.com/.

    Enjoy your visit!!

Moving to Kansas City - Kansas

We are a middle aged couple that have recently got married and have been living in Chicago. My husband grew up in Kansas and I am from another country. He has been thinking of relocating to Kansas City and I am wondering if it%26#39;s a good idea.

Moving to Kansas City - Kansas

    Mysfire --

Depends on what you%26#39;re looking for in a new hometown. Can you provide more specifics on what you like to do, home size/type you%26#39;re interested in, etc.

I happen to love living in KC. Also, remember that there are a lot of towns in the KC metro area. Some better than others. So again, depends on your wants and needs.

Moving to Kansas City - Kansas

Mysfire, it definitely depends on what you%26#39;re looking for but most people find Kansas City to be a pleasant place. I would suggest you and your husband spend a few days there and see for yourselves.

There are many different areas of Kansas City and as other posters mentioned, they vary. You will find KC to be a friendly, comfortable city with quick and easy access to most anything - as long as you have a car. Public transportation here is not so great. In my opinion, KC has a lot of the culture and major sports teams with much more accessibility than bigger cities such as Chicago.

    Water park

It%26#39;s the Grand Prairie Conference Center. Check the website www.hutchchamber.com and click on accomodations.

I%26#39;ve been to the water park and it is very fun! It%26#39;s a must see. At the moment the hotel is adding more rooms.

Just a quick note. The hotel is NOT boasting to be the largest water park in kansas. I think that would be the Great Wolf Lodge in KC.. the grand prairie his supposed to be the largest space-themed waterpark....a bit of a distinction.

The water park that is being asked about is at the Grand Prairie Hotel and Convention Center in Hutchinson KS. I%26#39;ve been to the park 2 times with family and each time I had a blast. There were these tube slides that I couldn%26#39;t tear my cousins away from. Also, the hot tub is really neat. I seats 15 people and has a waterfall running into it. It%26#39;s a pretty nice hotel also. They finished remodeling and it%26#39;s made it pretty nice.

If the weather cooperates- and the roads are clear, I suggest a road trip for a day or two- take a leisurely drive east on US 50 to Cottonwood Falls/Strong City- though not a long drive, you could stop in Florence and Peabody (check your cattle town history) and stay the night at the Prairie Fire Inn and Spa in Strong City(check out the web site) and get a world class massage. Head north on State 177 and check out the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve along with the town of Council Grove. Head east on US 56 (the old Sante Fe Trail) to McPherson and make a decision- tired and want to go to Hutch? Head south on 61- you%26#39;re 30 min away- Thinking Scandinavian? head north 30 min to Lindsborg- check out the town. Want to know what all those plants were you saw in the Flint Hills? Go to Hesston and check out the Dyche Arboretum- Finally- you a shopper? There%26#39;s a flea market at the intersection of US 50 and Ks 61 in Hutchinson- its been condemned for a highway project- but it is one of the greatest collections of junk/treasures in the midwest. Want to buy a ceramic Santa salt shaker and a iron hay wagon wheel in the same place? Check it out....

Hi,will be in wichita for 3 nights, whats the best area to stay in for bars and nightclubs within wlking distance? Is there any areas to avoid?

    cheers

    nightlife

The “Old Town” warehouse district in downtown Wichita has the most concentrated area of bars and nightclubs. There are really no problem areas per se.

Consider the Hotel at Old Town. http://www.hotelatoldtown.com/

Thanks for the info.I would also like to go to a wichita wranglers baseball game is the stadium within walking distance of the old town?

The stadium is approximately one mile from Old Town. Probably about a 20 minute walk. The Old Town area would be your best bet for an area to stay in.

If the schedule for your visit is flexible, the best time and weather would be during the River Festival, May 6th to May 14th. The 1812 Overture concert with military cannons and fireworks over the river on the 14th is the big event of the year around here. Hey, with any luck, you may even get to see a tornado. http://www.wichitafestivals.com/events/wrf/

The game schedule for the Wranglers is at www.wichitawranglers.com/index.cfm…

    Great Hotel near 119th St

I wil be traveling with a small child and my mother, and I need some kind of suite hotel near 119th and Nall that would have a small kitchen also. I am looking for something very nice..any sugestions? Thanks!

    Great Hotel near 119th St

You might want to try the Chase Suites by Woodfin on W 110th Street. It is a very nice apartment-style hotel that has 1 and 2 bedroom suites with fully equipped kitchens. Each morning a complimentary full continental breakfast is served in the morning and a social hour at night with hors d%26#39;oeuvres and drinks. I have not stayed at this hotel, but I think that it is set up like a Residence Inn by Marriott. I would highly recommend staying at the Chase Suite Hotel in Overland Park.

    Drury Inn Overland Park?

Can anyone give me a review or opinion on the Drury Inn in Overland Park located on Metcalf. I have not been able to find reviews of it anywhere but am looking to book a block of rooms. Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated!

    Drury Inn Overland Park?

This may be getting to you late. Really, reviews are pretty subjective. It depends on your standards and expectations. I stay there for business and have been pleased. It is an average mid range hotel in my opinion. Clean rooms, okay staff, not a ton of ammenities but the price is good. Hope this helps.

You need to post this on the New York forum. This is the one for Kansas.

    NYC - question about floors

Hi, I just wanted to know if its true that Manhattan buildings don%26#39;t have a 13th floor because it%26#39;s bad luck? Is this a fact? I was in NYC before, but I do not remember that! I guess I did not pay attention? Thanks.

    NYC - question about floors

I think that you meant to post this under the New York City forum. This forum is a forum for Manhattan, Kansas!

    NYC - question about floors

To the best of my knowledge there are no 13th floors in the buildings in Manhattan,Ks. Of course there are no buildings that tall.

there are buldings in manhattan kansas, that are that high. but there is only one and it is not a hotel. it is a apartment complex. it is 12 floors. the only hotel that i know that is tall is the holiday inn express ( formerly Ramada Inn) it has six floors.

just thought that i would throw that inn. thanks

  • Irish music

Does anyone know of a place in the greater Kansas City area that plays traditional Irish music? Thanks.

    Irish music

If you are still waiting. There are several irish pubs in Overland Park and Westport area.

Check our the local Irish Times newspaper for specifics.

    Irish music

Where can I obtain a copy of the Irish Times?

I would check out O%26#39;Dowd%26#39;s little Irish Pub, which can be found on The Country Club Plaza. I%26#39;m sure they have Irish singers that go through there all the time.

Both WJMcBrides - in OP and in KCK; both O%26#39;Dowd%26#39;s - on the Plaza and Zona Rosa; both O%26#39;Quigleys - Leawood and Lees Summit; O%26#39;Malleys of Weston, MO; Mickey%26#39;s Irish Pub in Lenexa, Fatheads Irish Pub in Leavenworth, KS; - but in all cases only sporadically. IrishKC.com posts current activities.

Thanks to everyone for the info. The irishks.com seems to have what I need. Thanks.

A travel guide to where? If you are planning a trip to Dodge City, call the Dodge City Visitors Bureau, they will send out a Visitors packet with Dodge City attractions and such. I got the phone number through a phone search on msn.com. Other cities look for Vistitors Bureaus or Chamber of Commerce offices for tourist info.

Go to www.travelks.com. This should provide you with the information you need.

    Lively hotels?

My sister and I will be coming to KC in May for a weekend. We%26#39;d like to stay at a hotel either w/i walking distance from bars/restaurants or stay at a hotel with a bar or club. We%26#39;re both in our 30%26#39;s and would prefer to keep it under $200 nightly. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

    Lively hotels?

You%26#39;ll want to stay at or near the Country Club Plaza and Westport. There is a Hampton Inn and an Embassy Suites located between the Plaza and Westport so you can explore both areas.

    Lively hotels?

I would agree with the first person that states you will want to stay near the Country Club Plaza area. This is a good mix of food/entertainment and shopping all within a short walk. If you are looking for something a little nicer with more attitude try The Raphael or The Fairmont as you can get some good weekend package deals that might work out for you.

Absolutely, stay on the Plaza! $200 will get you a nice place either Chain -- Mariott or Boutique type hotel, Raphael. As to the Westport area, I would exhaust yourself at the Plaza before thinking about Westport, it isn%26#39;t what it used to be.

There is also a Sheraton Suites on the Plaza. It is towards the west end of it...but everything is within walking distance.

I%26#39;ve stayed at the Sheraton and Raphael, both are excellent but quite different. The Raphael is lovely, ask for a Plaza view, and perhaps take cocktails over the road at the Fairmont (now the Intercontinental!) piano bar before strolling over the bridge to the Plaza and the many restaurants and bars there... great ribs at Houstons!!!

Going from Ga to Colorado and plan to drive through Kansas. Any suggestions-Not on a schedule. Just sightseeing

traveling through Kansas in June in a popup...

dianne, If you could let me know what highway you are planning on taking into Kansas I could give you some info on some of the more scenic areas of east central and south central Kansas. I know this state has a reputation for being flat, and parts of it are, but there are other areas that most people find picturesque and interesting.

    Pat

traveling through Kansas in June in a popup...

I would recommend the flint hills and the konza prairie. Really an amazingly beautiful part of Kansas... near Manhattan, KS.

    Dianne,

Our family stayed at Wilson Lake State Park off I-70 in October in our camper. It was a scenic area and quite pretty. I don%26#39;t know when you are traveling, but the park was nearly empty near the end of October. We had the area we chose completely to ourselves.

I live in Wilson, next ot Wilson Lake just off of I-70. It is not to crowded the first to middle of June but towards the end the 4th of July people start pilling in pretty early to get the good camping spots. The lake is pretty low right now, not much moisture here lately but it is still beautiful. There is a nice scenic route you can take around the back of the lake and through the hills. Along that route I think you can see the Garden of Eden in Lucas, The Oil Museums in Russell, There is a railway museum in Ellis, The Cathederal of the Plains in Victoria and of course a stop in Wilson, the Czech Capital of Kansas, is a must. We have a local store that makes out of this world homemade sausage of every type. Enjoy your trip and enjoy Kansas.

Depending on your intresest, great stops in Kansas include the Chalk Pyramids, the Grassroots Art Center , and the Kansas Cosmosphere.

http://www.kansastravel.org has the details on all three of those, and other fun stops.

Visit Manhattan KS -- the Kansas State campus and eat dinner at the Four Olives restaurant.

  • Looking for a Nice Downtown Hotel

We will be in Wichita soon and need a nice place to stay. Our son is performing with Music Theater Wichita at the Century II Convention Center, so need somewhere relatively close. It does not need to be overly fancy, but clean and comfortable. Anything we ';must'; see while there? Thanks so much!

Looking for a Nice Downtown Hotel

OhioDreamer,---Hi, There are two hotels within a very short walk of Century II . From the front door of either hotel to the door of the convention center should only be about five minutes.

The Broadview which is an older hotel but has been updated recently. It is listed as a three star. www.broadviewradisson.com. The other is a Hyatt www.hyatt.wichita.com. Needless to say it is a much nicer hotel but will also cost $ 50-60 a night more. There is one more hotel downtown but it is a few blocks away and is new and extremely nice.

www.hotelatoldtown.com. There is also a newly remodeled Holiday Inn only a few blocks away. So you have quite a few choices.

As for things to see . There is Wichita Botanica and Cowtown which are only about a mile from downtown. Botanica is a nice shady spot

www.botanica.org with many flowers and butterflies, cowtown is original buildings from when Wichita was a cattle town and the Texas trail herds were driven here to the rail head.

We also have a excellent zoo for a town of this size. If you go this time of the year go early as it is usually very hot here in July.

My wife and daughter are big fans of Music Theatre. They have season tickets and just saw ';The Full Monty'; yesterday. Is your son

in the production of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers?

If you have any more questions you can e-mail me direct at patrickh@donegal.net

Looking for a Nice Downtown Hotel

You have an excellent zoo for a city of any size.

In addition to the places that Pat mentions, the entire Old Town entertainment area is good. The museum of World Treasures is a hoot!

    Wichita Nightlife...professional crowd??

Myself and several colleges are in wichita for the next two weeks. We are looking for bars / lounges that cater to a bit more to the professional crowd.

Not that I have anything against a red solo cup and keg, just looking for something with a touch of class. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!!

    Wichita Nightlife...professional crowd??

You might try some of the bars in the Old Town area. If that doesn%26#39;t work out ask at your hotel. The Scotch and Sirloin on East Kellogg is a nice restaurant/bar but the clientel may be older than what you are looking for.

    Wichita Nightlife...professional crowd??

There is a relatively new bar that I know nothing about that may be worth a try. It is O%26#39;Brien%26#39;s Irish Pub in the 5200 block of East Kellogg. The chances of it having anything Irish except the name are very slim but it could be what you are looking for.
